Management Policy

1 To own and maintain the woodland for the convenience and enjoyment of the local community and visitors to the area, allowing free access on foot. Cycling, horse riding or scooter riding is not allowed.
We are aware of the health benefits of walking and see the wood as a great amenity, both in terms of a circular walk for pleasure, and as an alternative off-road route.
We are mindful of the needs of the disabled. The main footpath, recently resurfaced recently and is level and fairly even, enabling most people easy access. The use of wheelchairs is now possible along the full length of the path.
We operate a ‘good neighbour policy’, aiming to keep the owners of properties bordering the wood aware of management activity. We aim to respond promptly to any concerns they might have.

We see the wood as an educational resource and have produced an explanatory leaflet, available from the local tourist offices. New signs describing the wood have recently been erected at the three main entrances. (see below)

2 To manage the woodland in a sympathetic, environmentally correct manner in order to encourage biodiversity and healthy growth, avoiding chemical and artificial insecticides and herbicides and respecting the tree preservation order which covers the whole wood.
We take advice from experts and advisers employed by national and regional bodies, to ensure good husbandry in the management of the wood, and, in particular, will continue to operate the Woodland Grant Scheme administered by the Forestry Commission.
We maintain a tree nursery for replenishment of the wood, and for planting trees at schools and in other suitable sites in the town.

3 To be aware of safety for the public using the wood.
We survey the condition of the trees in the wood quarterly and take action if any become dangerous (e.g. dying, leaning, limbs hanging, etc.)
We inspect the footpaths monthly, and promptly repair any defects identified.
We survey the condition of fences, gates, seats and the tree nursery annually, and ensure that defects are rectified

4 To be aware of other interests.
The restrictions of an S.S.S.I., which applies to land to the west of Middle Bridge.
The requirements of the Electricity Board in servicing underground cables.
The requirements of Network Rail in managing the vegetation on its strip of land bordering the railway.
